Our event programme for 2022

We arrange two full programmes of events, covering about six months each and running from April to October/November, and then again through to March/April.  The listing below covers April-October 2022, and is also available in pdf form. The event listing will confirm the venue.

If you are not a member, you are still very welcome to attend. There is no entrance fee for our talks, but we do invite a small donation of £3.


150TH ANNIVERSARY PROGRAMME

APRIL

Wednesday 6th 19:45 – ZOOM TALK – “A guided tour of 1894 Croydon”. Carole Roberts will be our guide on this tour of Croydon in 1894. Saturday 9th 13:45 for 14:00 – 150th ANNIVERSARY OPENING EVENT. Including talks on historic Croydon by Janice Barter and the Reverend Canon Dr Andrew Bishop, and refreshments with an anniversary cake. The Mayor of Croydon will be present. Sunday 10th 10:00 – WALK – “Wandle Park and area”. Sharing all topics/aspects of interest to our society: the local history, geology, archaeology, ecology, ornithology and industrial history. With contributions by several members of CNHSS. Place: MEET AT 10:00 AT WANDLE PARK TRAM STOP.

Monday 11th 14:00 – VISIT – “The Old Palace Croydon”. A specially-arranged CNHSS tour of Old Palace by The Friends of The Old Palace. Please note this is a historic building with steep steps and other changes of level. Place: Meet at 14.00 at the visitor entrance gates in Old Palace Road. Monday 18th (Bank Holiday) 14:00 – ECOLOGY WALK – “Ancient Woods”. The first in a series of explorations of our local wildlife habitats, for our anniversary year. Spring flowers in Banstead Woods. Led by Jane McLauchlin and Malcolm Jennings. Place: MEET AT 14:00 IN THE HOLLY LANE CAR PARK, TQ273582.

Thursday 21st 19:45 – ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. This AGM will be followed by a refreshment break and talks on the formation of the Society and on aspects of Croydon life in 1870. Period costume optional. Place: THE DAVID SWEET HALL, EAST CROYDON UNITED REFORMED CHURCH, ADDISCOMBE GROVE, CROYDON CR0 5LP.

Monday 25th 19:45 – TALK – “An Introduction to Bird-watching”. Hints and tips for people new (or returning) to birdwatching. With a display ahead of ornithology field events in May. Place: THE HALL, SHIRLEY METHODIST CHURCH, 2 ELDON AVENUE, SHIRLEY CR0 8SD.

Saturday 30th 14:00 – WALK – “Central Croydon buildings in 1870”. Looking at buildings still extant from 1870, or that would have been important at that time. With contributions by several members of CNHSS. Place: MEET OUTSIDE THE WEST DOOR (THE MAIN ENTRANCE) OF THE MINSTER AT 14:00.

Monday 2nd (Bank Holiday) 14:00 – ECOLOGY WALK – “Bluebells and other late spring flowers in In Wood and Dollypers Hill”. Led by Jane McLauchlin and Malcolm Jennings. Place: MEET AT 14:00 AT THE NORTH END OF CATERHAM DRIVE, TQ316582.

Saturday 7th 10:00 – ORNITHOLOGY WALK – Birds in South Norwood Country Park”. A local ornithology field trip to South Norwood Country Park. All welcome, including those new to ornithology or to field trips. Place: MEET AT 10.00 IN THE SOUTH NORWOOD COUNTRY PARK CAR PARK. The entrance to the country park is off Albert Road, South Norwood SE25 4NE. CARE crossing the tramlines when travelling down the entrance road leading to the car park which is on the right.

Sunday 15th 10:00 – ORNITHOLOGY WALK – “Birds in Selsdon Wood”. A local field trip to Selsdon Wood listening out for bird song as an aid to identification. All welcome, including those new to ornithology or field trips. Place: MEET AT 10:00 IN THE CAR PARK IN OLD FARLEIGH ROAD CR28QF, just beyond Sandpiper Road, on the left if approaching from Selsdon Traffic lights. If the car park is full please park in Sandpiper Road and walk to the car park. Buses are 433 which stops in Sandpiper Road, the name of the request stop is Dove Close. Also 357 and 409 which stop in Old Farleigh Road, the name of the request stop is Selsdon Nature Reserve.

Wednesday 25th 19:45 – ZOOM TALK – “Birding around the Kent Coast: a quick tour of the birding hotspots around south east Kent and what you might see there”, by Nick Smith. After early retirement I started spending my leisure time photographing the bird life of SE Kent. I am a member of the nearby Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory, which is a great place to learn and practice my new hobby. BOOKING REQUIRED: members will be sent a link – please register by Sunday 22 May. JUNE

Wednesday 8th 19:45 – ZOOM TALK – “From the Museum”. A talk by member Chris Taylor on the fascinating geology and archaeology of artefacts in our collection from a 20,000-year-old site in south west France. Sunday 19th 10:00 – ECOLOGY WALK – “Chalk downland” – Continuing our series of explorations of our local wildlife habitats. Early summer flowers in our South London Downs National Nature Reserve. Led by Dominic North. Place: MEET AT 10:00 IN THE PUBLIC CAR PARK BEHIND THE FOX ON COULSDON ROAD (not the pub car park), TQ 317568. Bus or car-sharing recommended as the car park can be busy on Sundays.

Monday 27th 19:45 – TALK – “The Saintly Landscape in Croydon and its Region”. The saintly landscape surrounds us. It is comprised of church dedications, place names, inn names, street names and traditional associations. This talk by Dr. Trevor James looks at the saintly landscape in Croydon and its region. JULY

Monday 18th 19:45 – TALK – “Henry Keatley Moore …… Mayor of Croydon 1906-1908 …. and Moore”, by Jill Hall. This talk is about Jill’s great-grandfather – musician, author, conservationist and erstwhile member of CNHSS – and his considerable influence upon the life and times of Croydon into the twentieth century. Place: THE HALL, ST MATTHEW’S CHURCH, CHICHESTER ROAD, EAST CROYDON CR0 5NQ.

Saturday 30th 14:00 – WALK – “The Woodside and South Croydon Railway”. A ramble by tram and on foot to discover what remains of this short line which opened in 1885 and closed in 1983. Led by Edward Hart. Place: MEET AT WOODSIDE TRAM STOP AT 14:00.


AUGUST

Saturday 6th 14:00 – WALK – “East Croydon and Addiscombe”. Find out what Napoleon has to do with East Croydon and where D.H. Lawrence lived when he published his first novels. Combining historical research with personal reminiscences. Led by Tony Skrzypczyk and Angela Vanegas. Place: MEET AT 14:00 AT THE CRICKETERS, 107 ADDISCOMBE ROAD, CROYDON CR0 6SG.

Monday 29th (Bank Holiday) 14:00 – ECOLOGY AND GEOLOGY WALK – “Heathland” – Explore the varied geology and see how the heather is regenerating after the fire on Croham Hurst. Led by John Hines and Jane McLauchlin. Place: MEET AT 14:00 AT THE JUNCTION OF CROHAM MANOR ROAD AND BANKSIDE, TQ 335635.


SEPTEMBER

Monday 5th 19:45 – TALK – “Introduction to the Insects”. Three short talks illustrating the diversity of some insect groups – hoverflies, moths and shieldbugs. Find out what the Entomology Section does, how insects are studied and what happens to the results. Two of the speakers are authors of books in the Surrey Wildlife Atlas series, supported by your Society and published by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. Copies will be available at the meeting. Tuesday 13th 13:00 – VISIT – “Croydon Minster”. The location of Croydon’s Parish Church from Saxon times, in 2020 the Minster also celebrated a 150th anniversary, of the reconsecration of the rebuilt church following the fire of 1867. At the end of the tour there will an optional visit to the Tower bell ringing chamber. Led by David Morgan, Education Officer for Croydon Minster. Optional donation to the Minster. Monday 19th 19:45 – ZOOM TALK – “People and Families of the Wandle Valley”, by Mick Taylor of the Wandle Industrial Museum. The River Wandle has long been an attraction to individuals and their families, to live and work. This talk tells the story of some famous names and those lesser known people who have lived and worked in the Wandle Valley from the Old Palace at Croydon to the mills of Wandsworth. OCTOBER

Saturday 8th 14:30 – TALK – “From Fenton to Fincher: the evolvement of photography from 1854 to 1968”. A talk with war photojournalism as a central theme by Matthew Butson, Vice President of the Getty Images Hulton Archive. Place: THE HALL, ST MATTHEW’S CHURCH, CHICHESTER ROAD, EAST CROYDON CR0 5NQ.

Monday 17th 19:45 – ZOOM TALK – “Test-pitting in Old Woking”. The development of Old Woking from Saxon times to the Jacobean period.
