Croham Hurst

A unique site in Croydon with a history stretching back to the Stone age with interesting geology and a Croydon Parish Boundary post near Bankside. Gullies and paths lead up to the heather and pine covered top. Along the way the tree flora varies with beech on the lower slopes, areas of tall cherry and oak with silver birch in parts. Excellent for a fungi foray in Autumn and a wide variety of woodland birds, you are sure to find something to see.

Beech, oak, wood anemonies. The rare St John’s Wort is found beside the Upper Selsdon Road

Birds include:

Great and Blue Tit, Robin, Long-tailed Tit, Jay, Blackbird, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Wren, Nuthatch, Goldcrest, Treecreeper

Habitat: Heathland, woodland
History:

Always an open space due to the poor nature of the soil, in 1898 there was a proposal to build housing on Croham Hurst. A public campaign to save the land followed and in 1901 it was acquired by Croydon Corporation as a public open space

Archaeology:

The round barrow – remains of hut circles, Neolithic flints, pre-historic burial mounds – is a Scheduled Monument
