Addiscombe Recreation Ground

Completely surrounded by houses and only accessible on foot, this open green space contains various sports facilities but is bordered by lawns, colourful flower beds and plenty of seating. There is a magnificent massive oak at the Bingham Road entrance. At one end is a small garden managed by local residents and set up with bird feeders which are busy with sparrows and other small birds.

The ground had been swampy until drained

History:

In 1843 this was part of meadow called Clays, in the Ashburton estate owned by William Bingham Baring the second Baron Ashburton. When in 1903 his widow Louisa died the whole Ashburton estate was sold and made available for development by the purchaser. The people of Addiscombe petitioned for a park and Addiscombe Recreation Ground opened on 28th June 1905 with a ceremony that included a band, fireworks and sports for children.
